Long lunches, good coffee, fish straight from the harbour. The stretch of coast between St James and Kalk Bay has everything you need and nothing you don't.

Restaurants, Seafood

Harbour House

Kalk Bay · 5 min

Built directly into the working harbour rocks, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing sweeping views of False Bay. The kitchen builds its reputation on daily-caught linefish, grilled or pan-fried without unnecessary fuss, alongside oysters, sushi and prawn dishes. Consistently ranked among the top two restaurants in Kalk Bay. Book ahead.

Live Bait

Kalk Bay · 5 min

Perched on the breakwater at Kalk Bay Harbour since 1999, with the ocean literally beneath your seat. Fresh linefish, sardines, sushi and generous portions in a casually brilliant setting. From late July, humpback and southern right whales breach offshore while you eat. Walk-ins welcome.

The Black Marlin

Miller's Point · 25 min

Open since the mid-1960s in a former manor house at Miller's Point, four kilometres beyond Simon's Town on the Cape Point road. House specialities run to Cape rock lobster, oyster platters and fresh linefish, all eaten with one of the best coastal views on the peninsula. Between July and November, whales breach regularly from the terrace.

Bertha's

Simon's Town · 20 min

A Simon's Town waterfront institution at the edge of the naval harbour, open from breakfast through to late dinner seven days a week. The terrace looks directly over the marina, good for a long, relaxed meal with Cape wine after a day at Boulders or Cape Point. Relaxed, generous, unpretentious.

Lucky Fish & Chips

Kalk Bay · 5 min

Among the best fish and chips on the entire Cape Peninsula, crispy battered hake, fresh snoek, calamari rings, served outdoors right at the harbour wall. Casual, affordable and completely without pretension. Arrive early; queues form fast on weekends.

The fishermen sell their catch from the harbour in the early morning. It doesn't get fresher than that.

Restaurants, Casual & Local

Olympia Café & Bakery

Kalk Bay · 5 min

Open since the early 2000s and still Kalk Bay's best argument for going nowhere all morning. The daily blackboard menu features scrambled eggs, mussels and freshly baked croissants from the in-house bakery. The ordering system is famously chaotic and the service relaxed, neither of which stops anyone from coming back. Open 7am–9pm daily.

The Brass Bell

Kalk Bay · 5 min

Built in 1939 and now expanded into nine dining and events venues, the Brass Bell protrudes directly over the harbour mouth, waves occasionally reach the tables closest to the edge. Best for a long beer on the deck as the sun drops, with seafood, pizza and grills to keep things going. Cape Town's most reliably iconic pub.

Café Roux

Noordhoek · 25–30 min

Established in 2006 in Noordhoek Farm Village, under sprawling oak trees at the foot of Chapman's Peak Drive. Hearty breakfasts and slow lunches on a large outdoor terrace, with a Bedouin tent for summer shade and a wood-burning stove inside for winter. Live music, film screenings and comedy nights make it worth a dedicated trip.

Dixies

Glencairn · 15 min

A proper local pub with one of the better panoramic views of False Bay on the whole peninsula. Unpretentious and good value, steak, seafood curry, pizza, with a crowd that's been coming for years. Good for lunch after Jager's Walk, or a post-swim beer with a view.

Coffee & Cafés

Olympia Café & Bakery

Kalk Bay · 5 min

The in-house bakery produces croissants, sourdough and pastries fresh each morning, and the coffee is consistently excellent. No reservations; the queue moves, the people-watching is exceptional, and a table always appears. It's where the neighbourhood comes first thing, and then again mid-morning to debrief.

Salt

Kalk Bay · 5 min

Glass-fronted and practically hanging over the Kalk Bay Harbour, with fishing boats directly below. Small plates with a global palette alongside excellent coffee and a young, creative atmosphere. Good for a late morning or a light lunch with a view.

Empire Café

Muizenberg · 5 min

Tucked down a Muizenberg side street with seashell chandeliers, old surfboards on the walls and genuine sea views. Intimate, quirky and genuinely artistic without trying, one of those cafés that earns its reputation quietly. Strong coffee, fast WiFi, no rush.

Joon

Muizenberg · 5 min

A neighbourhood café that does several things very well: excellent coffee, home-baked pastries and wood-fired pizza among the best on the peninsula. Warm, community-anchored and genuinely welcoming. The kind of place you come once and find yourself back at three days later.

Knead Bakery

Muizenberg beachfront · 5 min

Right on the beachfront with uninterrupted views of Surfer's Corner and the famous coloured huts. Artisan breads baked on site daily, woodfired pizza and excellent coffee. The surf check and breakfast happen simultaneously here, the best way to start any day in False Bay.
