South Africa's most iconic learn-to-surf break, with consistent right-handers peeling along a sandy bottom. The False Bay water runs warmer than the Atlantic side, the Agulhas Current makes a real difference in summer, and the long, gently sloping waves give beginners genuine time to find their feet. Multiple schools and rental shops operate directly from the beach.
Danger Beach
Kalk Bay · 5 min
A fast, hollow reef break between Kalk Bay and Muizenberg that locals have surfed for decades. Quick and unforgiving, experienced surfers only. Often rideable when Muizenberg is too small or too crowded, and worth seeking out on those days.
Long Beach
Kommetjie · 35–40 min
One of the best waves on the Atlantic side of the peninsula, powerful, consistent swell and virtually no one in the water. Cold enough to require a good wetsuit year-round. The drive over Chapman's Peak makes getting here part of the experience.
Scarborough
45–50 min
A wild, remote cove at the very end of the peninsula road with a small but punchy beach break. The drive through the Cape Point reserve to get here is half the point. Almost no facilities, no crowds, no noise, just fynbos, boulders and open ocean.
You can see the surf from the cottage terrace. Some mornings the decision is already made before you've finished coffee.

90-minute lessons taught by qualified instructors directly at Surfer's Corner, group or private. Kids welcome from age five; board and wetsuit included in all lessons. Walk-in board and wetsuit rentals also available for those who've been before.

Private lessons with board, wetsuit and ocean safety coaching included as standard. Couple and family discounts available. Small groups and personalised instruction, good if you want more attention in the water and less time waiting for a turn.
