The coast path, the mountain above Kalk Bay, the fynbos, the fishing harbour, False Bay rewards the people who move through it slowly. Here is where to walk and what to look for.
Easy Walks
St James → Kalk Bay Coastal Walk
2.5 km · 30–60 min · Easy
The path follows the shoreline from the tidal pool past fishing cottages and tidal rock shelves, finishing at Kalk Bay Harbour. Flat, paved and accessible to all, the kind of walk that reveals different things depending on the tide and the light. Return by train (one stop) if you plan to linger over coffee at Olympia.
Jager's Walk
Fish Hoek · ~2 km return · 45–60 min · Easy
A paved promenade cut into the granite cliffs between Fish Hoek and Clovelly, with benches positioned for maximum False Bay views. The rock pools at low tide reveal sea anemones, starfish and shore crabs. Between July and November, this is one of the better land-based whale-watching spots on the peninsula, southern rights come close to shore to calve.
Take the train one stop to Kalk Bay. Walk back along the coast. Stop when you want to stop.

Boyes Drive & Kalk Bay Mountain
Views · Fynbos · Mountain
Boyes Drive is a scenic 7 km mountain road built in 1929, running along the ridge between Lakeside and Kalk Bay with elevated views from Muizenberg all the way to Simon's Town. Hiking trails above Kalk Bay access Silvermine Nature Reserve from the eastern side, through Spes Bona Valley and the Amphitheatre. Steep in places; always worth it.
Silvermine
Mountain trails · Panoramic views
A section of Table Mountain National Park about 20 km south of the city, with well-marked trails through montane fynbos above a 19th-century reservoir. Quieter than the main mountain and genuinely beautiful, Cape sugarbirds, sunbirds and occasional black eagles overhead. Allow two to three hours for a proper loop; the reservoir makes an excellent destination for a shorter walk.
Cape Point
Dramatic cliffs · Wildlife · Full day · 40–45 min drive
The drive through the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is half the experience, baboons, Cape Mountain Zebra, bontebok, ostriches and hundreds of bird species before you've even parked. At the point itself, sheer cliffs drop to a shipwreck-scattered coast. The funicular runs to the summit; the old lighthouse walk takes 45 minutes each way and is considerably better.
Good to know
Most hikes fall within Table Mountain National Park. Check current entry fees before you go and bring water, the wind picks up quickly on the ridge.
